These vintage shawls are handwoven on back strap looms by village women in various parts of Guatemala. High quality, heavy duty cotton and silk, these weavings were used by women to carry their babies while doing work in the home and fields. This particular shawl is around 50 years old and comes from the region north of Quetzaltenango in the central highlands and uses mostly natural dyes. They are quite sturdy and will last a lifetime if properly cared for.
